Progressive Executive Job Search Coaching Empowers Another Motivated Client

One of the most satisfying elements of being a coach is connecting ambitious business professionals with a job search approach that is proven to work. I can’t tell you how often I speak to a potential client that has spent months letting “common sense” guide his search activities—only to end up dejected, disheartened and downright depressed.

The problem, of course, is that common sense tends to work against most job seekers. After all, doesn’t it stand to reason that the more online job applications you fill out, the more interviews and job offers you’ll receive? And doesn’t it make sense to put hours into cultivating relationships with recruiters, since they have a vested interest in placing you in your dream job? Well, the answers to both of the above questions are a resounding “NO!”

Consider The Story Of Sebastien…

As a highly successful finance and operations executive, Sebastien hadn’t been a job seeker in a long time. He spent the first 16 years of his career at the same company taking on progressively greater responsibilities in manufacturing and engineering roles. However, due to the economic downturn in the Oil & Gas industry, his company began to restructure and Sebastien found himself in an increasingly diminished role.

Like many job seekers, Sebastien started by updating his resume, looking at job postings, and talking to recruiters. After 3 months, the thing that struck him most was how isolating the process was. He felt increasingly lonely as he filled out online job applications and waited on call-backs from recruiters. As he said, “If you think that finding a new job gets easier the more experience you have, it’s not. Nobody knows you in the job market.”

It was around the 3 month mark that Sebastien received an invitation to learn more about “The first conversation [with a coach] was telling,” said Sebastien. “I had been solicited by other services and soon realized they were scams. It was easy to see that Kyle’s concept and services were different, so I decided to join.”

Sebastien brought a strong work ethic to’s client branding phase, and was especially challenged by the Candidate Bio exercise. “After 16 years, I hadn’t done a proper inventory of what I had achieved, much less of what impact I had had on the business,” he said. But, once he started thinking more broadly about his experiences and achievements, his self-confidence began to grow. “It was a lot of work, but the resume and LinkedIn profile became spotless. I have gotten so many compliments on my new resume and how it was worded.”

During the exposure phase of the process, Sebastien saw a major contrast with his original approach. “Using my old way, I spent so much time just sitting around and waiting. The way is much more proactive—once I learned how to properly engage hiring managers directly, my calendar went from having zero meetings to not having enough time in the day to accommodate all the meetings.” Naturally, his self-confidence began to soar in proportion to his newfound productivity. He started focusing on cultivating new relationships with professional assets that he’ll be able to leverage for the rest of his career. “This phase took me way out of my comfort zone by forcing me to connect with new people instead of interacting only with people I already knew.”

Despite his busy meeting schedule, Sebastien routinely made time for live support calls. “In the beginning I started with 2 calls a week to get to know the process better, but I eventually went down to 1 call per week as my scheduled picked up,” he said. “The calls made me work harder. With 6-8 professionals on the line, there’s a feeling of camaraderie and that everyone is in the same boat but just at different stages of the process.” Sebastien also noted that it’s helpful when you have the chance to learn from other business leaders and share tips. “The calls offer a chance to recalibrate yourself on an ongoing basis, so that you stay on track,” he said. “It’s only an hour of your time, but it gets you going for the following week.”

When his interviews started to get more formal, it didn’t take Sebastien long to realize that the 90-day Action Plan was a “game changer” for standing apart from other job seekers. “Instead of just sending a thank you note to the interviewer, I would also send a clear, detailed plan for the first 3 months of employment,” he said. “I got so many compliments, and some companies even said they were going to implement what I had done on a wider scale.”

Considering his brimming confidence, in addition to an interviewing strategy designed to help him stand out, it was no surprise that companies got interested in a hurry. And, when the right role came his way (a financial leadership role focused on reducing and realigning costs in the Oil & Gas downturn), he was able to negotiate from a position of strength. Working with the MeetYourGig team, Sebastien crafted a win-win proposal in response to his future employer’s initial offer. In just a few short hours, he netted an extra $10K in salary!

Looking back on his job search, Sebastien believes the process taught him humility, and it increased his sensitivity as a corporate leader since he was personally affected by a lay-off. And, as for his experience with, he said, “I found a true partner that helped me every step of the way. I didn’t feel like I was all by myself anymore. A bad situation turned into a fantastic learning opportunity, it expanded my professional network personally, and I know exactly who to contact for advice when it’s time for the next move.”
